Benjamín Saldaña Rocca y la representación indígena en «La Felpa»: las primeras denuncias y su interpretación gráfica en la época del caucho
Abstract
This study analyzes, in the first part, three columns and in the second part, six illustrations from the Peruvian newspaper La Felpa (1907-1908), published by Benjamín Saldaña Rocca. The objective is to analyze the representations of the Amazonian Indians and the cauchero conflict in the texts and images. Thus, in the first part, two columns entitled "La ola de sangre" (The wave of blood) and one entitled "Los indios del Putumayo" (The Putumayo Indians) will be examined. In the second part, six illustrations reproduced in some issues of La Felpa will be analyzed with two objectives: to review the paradigms of the time and to demonstrate how Robuchon's photographs were used as inspiration for the illustrations. Our proposal lies in offering a reading on the importance of collecting critical voices about a dramatic period in our history. We consider this vital to build a decolonial discourse on the rubber era and on the ideological reproduction that was present in the written media.
