ecommodification of the sacred: the representation of the coca leaf in the homonymous poem of "Ccoca" (1926) by Mario Chabes

Keywords: indigenism, avant-garde, entheogens, sacred plants, Andean literature

Abstract

This paper interprets the depiction of the coca leaf in the first poem Ccoca, published on September 23, 1926, in Buenos Aires, to understand its connections to Indigenism and the avant-garde. After introducing J. Mario Chávez and explaining why his name was changed to Mario Chabes, a brief overview of the commentary and studies on his book is presented to identify which aspects of his work facilitate an understanding of the poem “Ccoca.” The findings interpret the meaning of the verses and the footnote by examining them within the context of their creation (1923–1926). It is concluded that, in the book’s eponymous poem, the depiction of the coca leaf constitutes a unifying poetic intervention within the aesthetic and political debate in 20th-century South American literature.
