Critical analysis of lexicographic discourse (CALD): an examination of the history of Andean languages

Abstract

The names of the Andean languages of South America have not always been incorporated into the dictionaries of the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE). However, when they have been considered, the definitions of the languages and their speakers have responded to ways of thinking about ethnicity as a different Other. In diachronic and ideological terms, lexicographic practice has not always been the same. The aim of this paper is to study the incorporations and definitions of Andean languages in the dictionaries produced by the RAE’s academic corporation, which are associated with racial and linguistic ideologies. To this end, we mainly examine the lexicographical treatment of living Andean languages, endangered Andean languages and dead Andean languages. In this work, we conclude that the lexicographic narrative has incurred in evaluative aspects of racialization, exoticism and hierarchy, made from the Western power.

Marco Antonio Lovón Cueva, Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú

Es lingüista y politólogo. Tiene una Maestría en Lingüística de la Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. Ha realizado estudios especializados en el Máster de Lingüística Hispana y Lexicografía en la Real Academia Española, Madrid, España, gracias a la Beca Fundación Carolina. Es licenciado en Ciencias Políticas y licenciado en Lingüística por la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM). Actualmente es candidato a un doctorado en Lingüística en la PUCP. Marco Lovón es profesor de Lengua y Gramática, Didáctica del Texto, Escritura Académica, Español como Segunda Lengua o Lengua Extranjera, Realidad Internacional, Ecología Política, Geopolítica en la UNMSM, la PUCP, la UPC y la Academia Diplomática del Perú (ADP). Es uno de los autores del Diccionario de peruanismos. Y es miembro del equipo de consulta lingüística de la Academia Peruana de la Lengua (APL).
