From the mythical to the human. Yanantin and masintin in the Andean testimony

Abstract

In this research, we intend to study how couple relationships are in the Quechua testimony. We can assure that, in the Quechua cosmovision, the relationships between animals, gods, men and nature are expressed in
dualities, by correspondence, by symmetry, by analogy, by complementarity and by reciprocity. It is a type of cognitive structure that includes the entire cosmological order. For this reason, it is possible to find traditional communities where there are roles played by both men and women that can be traced back through chronicles and Inca mythology. Consider the mythical couple Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo. The spaces they founded represent the high (hanan), the masculine (the Inca), the low (hurin) and the feminine (the Coya). In the cosmological drawing of Santa Cruz Pachacuti, this dualism is also expressed in mythical figures represented by the notions of yanantin and masintin. In the same dimension, we also mention some couples from The Huarochirí Manuscript, such as Kavillaca and Cuniraya or Chuquisuso and Pariacaca, whose performances imply a type of complementation, analogy and symmetry, aspects that will guide the analysis when we focus on the social relations between men and women in the Quechua testimony

Manuel Larrú Salazar, Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos

Es profesor del Departamento Académico Profesional de Literatura de la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM). Es especialista en tradición oral andina. Ha publicado artículos en revistas especializadas, tales como Letras, Escritura y Pensamiento, Lymen, San Marcos, Boletín de la Academia Peruana de la Lengua, Insula Barataria, entre otros. Recientemente, en colaboración con Sara Viera y Eduardo Huaytán, ha publicado el libro Nuevos caminos de la crítica (UNMSM, 2021). Ha sido miembro del equipo editor de la revista Alma Máter, del Vicerrectorado de Investigación de la UNMSM y del Comité Científico del Boletín de la Academia Peruana de la Lengua. Ha participado como ponente en diversos seminarios nacionales e internacionales. Ha sido jefe de la Biblioteca Central y del Sistema de Bibliotecas de la Universidad de San Marcos. Fue director de la Escuela Académico Profesional de Literatura durante los años 2007-2013. Actualmente, dirige el Seminario de Literatura Quechua y Orales del Perú.

Sara Milagros Viera Mendoza, Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia

Es licenciada en Literatura, licenciada en Educación, magíster en Literatura con mención en Estudios Culturales y doctora en Literatura Peruana y Latinoamericana. Es catedrática en la Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia. Centra su investigación en autores indigenistas, testimonio andino y literatura de tradición oral (andina y afroandina). Ha publicado los libros Entre la voz y el silencio. Las hijas de la diosa Kavillaca (2012), Desde la otra orilla. La voz afrodescendiente (2013), editado por el Seminario de Historia Rural Andina y el Fondo Editorial de la UNMSM, y Willaykunata awaqkuna. Tejiendo voces en paños blancos (2022). Es coautora del libro Nuevos caminos de la crítica (2021). Artículos suyos han aparecido compilados en Cultura afroperuana (2018), Tinkuy, encontro com a literatura e crítica peruanas (2016), José María y los quechuas de América hoy (2013), y en las revistas especializadas Escritura y Pensamiento, Tema y Variaciones de Literatura (México) y Desde el Sur.
