Definition
The Bulletin of the Peruvian Academy of Language (hereinafter, BAPL) is a biannual publication of the Peruvian Academy of Language (APL) that publishes papers, notes, and reviews on literature, linguistics, and philology, primarily within the Hispanic world.
Mission
BAPL's mission is to publish high-quality content to enrich knowledge in the fields of Hispanic literary and linguistic studies. To this end, it has adopted an open-access policy.
Objective, Approach, and Scope
The BAPL is a publication in Spanish whose aim is to promote and present works resulting from theoretical or applied research in linguistics and literature, as well as those stemming from their relationship with other disciplines in the humanities, primarily within the Hispanic sphere. While it focuses on linguistic and literary studies of Spanish, it also publishes texts on indigenous or native languages that have had historical contact with this language, including their literary expressions, as well as other languages of the Romance family.
The BAPL promotes the development of a virtual community made up of authors, publishers, and readers. It endorses the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) and provides historical access to content. Furthermore, since its inception, it has encouraged the participation of authors without distinction of class, gender, race, or religion, and it supports the UN initiative promoting the Millennium Development Goals related to education and development, specifically Goals 2, 3, and 8.
BAPL is a biannual journal published in both print and digital formats, with issues released twice a year: from January to June (first issue) and from July to December (second issue). BAPL is accessible through the Open Journal System (OJS). The ISSN for the print edition is 0567-6002, and the ISSN for the online version is 2708-2644.
The Bulletin’s Sociocultural Significance
The BAPL has been committed to society and the academic community since 1967. For more than 50 years, it has been dedicated to promoting research in the fields of literature and linguistics, primarily in the Hispanic world, through the publication of papers, notes, and reviews. The BAPL’s target audience consists of researchers, faculty members, and undergraduate and graduate students in the aforementioned disciplines.
Historical Overview of the Journal
- Brief History
The BAPL was first published in 1967, headed by Aurelio Miró Quesada. It is currently edited by Eduardo Hopkins Rodríguez. Since 2020, the journal has also been published digitally.
- Extended History
BAPL was first published in print in 1967, under the leadership and direction of Aurelio Miró Quesada, on the 80th anniversary of the APL. Since then, it has been published consecutively over the following nine terms (under the editorship of Aurelio Miró Quesada Sosa, José Jiménez Borja, Augusto Tamayo Vargas, Estuardo Núñez Hague, Luis Jaime Cisneros Vizquerra, Marco G. Martos Carrera, Ricardo Silva-Santisteban Ubillús, Marco G. Martos Carrera in his second term, and Eduardo Hopkins Rodríguez since 2022). It began as an annual bulletin and later became a biannual publication.
The original purpose of the BAPL was to serve as a platform for presenting the Corporation’s work. It traces its origins to the “Anales”, which were edited by Francisco García Calderón and Secretary Luis Benjamín Cisneros. The cover of the 1887 booklet reads: “Anales de la Academia Correspondiente de la Real Española en el Perú” [“Annals of the Corresponding Academy of the Royal Spanish Academy in Peru.”] Lima: Imp. de Torres Aguirre, Mercaderes, 150.” The Annals were published only once. Later, in 1917, with the support of Ricardo Palma and under the direction of Javier Prado y Ugarteche, Academician Enrique Castro y Oyanguren was commissioned to prepare the first Bulletin, in order to record academic speeches, notes, and resolutions. The cover of the Bulletin bore the title Bulletin of the Peruvian Corresponding Academy of the Royal Spanish Academy of Language. The publication of the Bulletin was interrupted for a few years, until, in 1967, it began to be published regularly. Among the works appearing in it were lexicographical paper slips. In the years that followed, research on literature, philology, and linguistics was published more frequently. As of 2018, it was decided to establish three types of contributions for the BAPL: papers, notes, and reviews. The induction and acceptance speeches for the APL appear in the issues immediately following an academic’s admission to the Corporation. The BAPL also includes obituaries.
